Single for a single-bed room?

Hi. In a hotel-check-in situation, can the word "single" be used to mean "single-bed room," or the word "double" to mean "double-bed room"? Thank you in advance for your help.

Hotel Clerk: How may I help you?

Customer: I'd like a single/double, please.
