sinecure and insinuations

Are these well known words in English?

Top answer

insinuation is common enough that I know it! It may not be in the top 1000, but most people know it. sinecure is a different story.

Yes, I've heard "insinuation" in Am movies but I didn't know how common it was. I asked about "sinecure" because this word has become so common in the media over here that I just had to ask. Thanks

May I also ask about "lethargy" and "catharsis"? Both are relatively common in my neck of the woods.

These are not common in conversation, but most college educated people know the meanings. I suspect that many people with only a high school education would not know the meanings, but might be able to guess the meanings correctly when the words are seen in context.
