Since/For the last decade

All these days I thought "Since the last decade" was correct but Google search results and ngrams graph show "for the last decade" has been used very widely than the former.

Which is the correct one?

My interpretation of this is as follows:

"Since the last decade" means after the previous ten years (2004 to 2014), that is, you're talking about the period from Dec. 31, 2014 to Nov. 17, 2015.

"For the last decade" means during the last ten years (2005 to 2015), that is, you're talking about the period from Nov. 17, 2005 to Nov. 17, 2015.

Here are a couple of points to ponder.

If a native speaker means the 10 years prior to now (roughly Nov/2005 to Nov/2015) he is in my experience unlikely to say 'the last decade'. Much more natural is 'the last 10 years'.
