Since with past tense

Can I use "since" with the past tense in sentences like a ?

a) Last year it was the first time since 1956 that nobody was there.

Since is fine. The sentence sounds wrong though. Last year, it was the first time since 1956 that nobody attended/came.

"Nobody was there" sounds natural to my AmE ear.
