Since + present simple

Is it at all possible to use present simple in a sentence with since? For instance:

- Since he got back he NEEDS nothing but sleep.

A lecturer of mine at the university said the sentence is incorrect and even though I'm merely a student and my opinion may not matter much, the sentence doesn't strike me as abnormal or as anything I wouldn't here from a native speaker. Question is, am I right? Emotion: wink

Top answer

It does not strike me as abnormal for native speakers in conversation, but the grammar is suspect, and a careful writer would avoid present simple in favor of present perfect: Since he got back he has needed nothing but sleep.
