Since or for

He has been locked into a dark room since/for many years by an unknown creature.

Which one should I use since or for? please help.

Hi I would use 'for' because : (i) 'For' is followed by a duration of time Example: I have known him for three years. (ii) 'Since' is followed by a specific point in time, like since that time, something has happened. Example: I have known him since my first day of high school.

I would use 'for' because :
(i) 'For' is followed by a duration of time
Example: I have known him for three years.
(ii) 'Since' is followed by a specific point in time, like since that time, something has happened.
Example: I have known him since my first day of high school.
