since

"He has not been to his hometown since the first of May."

I was asked to rewrite the above sentence in the following form-
"He last...."

What will be the correct way to rewrite the sentence in the aforementioned way? Will it be like this?

"He last went to his hometown on the first of May."

That works. There is, however, some ambiguity (in both sentences) as to when he went, how long he stayed, and if he is still there.
