"He hadn't missed his home for the fifteen years since he had left it."

Actually apart from the use of since I need to ask if this sentence is correct, something about it doesn't seem right.

That could be because it seems to have been taken out of the context it should be in. Let's say that it can seem natural in an appropriate context, but it seems strange as an isolated sentence.
