Simply

Hi.
I always have problems with translating 'simply'.Here is a sentence:

"He would do better to play 5....Nf6, simply defending the Bishop on g4."
from play winning chess

Might I say:
"5...Nf6, which defends the g4 bishop in a simple way, was better"?

Or what should I translate?

It is hard to judge without studying more of the game being played. I suggest that 'simply' may mean 'only' here.

The bishop was undefended on g4 and Black developed a knight on e7, blocking his queen; Thus allowing White to sacrifice his bishop on f7, check with his knight on g5 uncovering the white Queen's attack on g4 bishop and capturing the bishop the next next move,a very typical opening trap.
Then he recommends what I wrote instead of the knight move to e7.

Sorry, but I haven't played chess for at least 20 years.
