simple subjects

Hi. I need help with determining the simple subject in the following sentences:

Many Cherokee Indians learned to read and write. I chose Cherokee Indians in answer to (who) learned to read and write.

The rights of American Indians were being neglected. I chose rights but was not sure on this one.

Sequoyah's leadership helped his people's cause. I chose leadership.

If any of my answers are wrong, will you kindly explain why. Any helpful suggestions in figuring these types of problems out, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
