Simple sentence problem

Is this a proper sentence - Key is preperation.

I know there is a phrase preperation is key but i'm not looking to use this phrase.

I would be greatful to hear your views on this. Would i have to prefix the sentence with "the" to make it correct or would it stand ok as i have left it?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I wouldn't say it's wrong. But if I read it or heard it, I'd have to think about it for a moment to understand it. 'The key . . . ' would be more common.

Note this.

Preparation is key. 'Key ' is an adjective.

The key is preparation. 'Key' is a noun.
