Simple present tense, third person singular has an "s." Third person plural does not.

Many of the bad things which happen can be avoided. (Things is plural, so happen must be plural.)

A full moon, which happens every 28 days, usually causes high tides. (Moon is singular, so happens must be singular.)

Thanks for reply.

I still have a doubt.

yesterday, I read a heading

Mumbai split wide open

I was expecting splits instead of split. Here Mumbai is the name of city. why the verb here not been written as splits.

There are two possibilities.

1. simple past tense, intransitive - "It split." "Mumbai split wide open yesterday."

2. a headline (words are often left out) present passive/past passive - "Mumbai [is/was] split wide open."
