Simple pronoun question

Hi all -

I am trying to brush up on my pronoun useage when referring to a previous sentence.

In the following two sentences:

Jim likes baseball and Harry likes soccer. He told his friends otherwise though.

Who does "He" refer to and why?

If I were to use the following two sentences, would you still say they are unrelated?

Harry likes soccer. He told his friends he didn't though.

I see no difference between the relation of these two sentences and the first example other than that it is obvious who the pronoun "he" refers to. If you still think they are unrelated, please explain why.
