Simple present tense

"I eat an apple" is simple present tense. But I don't understand.. what does that mean? Does it mean that I'm eating an apple right now?
"I eat an apple every Thursday" or "I eat an apple EVERY DAY" sounds right, "I eat an apple" sounds wrong...

I don't understand simple present tense..

'I eat an apple' is fine as, for example, the answer to the question, 'What do you do when you're hungry at work?'

How would you explain simple present though? Like continuous present tense is something you do, an on-going activity. I a m EATING an apple.
