Simple present?

Hi Everyone,

This is a really simple question. Emotion: cool

I would like to confirm that - is - is in the simple present tense. I know it's an auxiliary verb, which is why I'm asking the question. Is it also the main verb in this sentence?

I don't know why I'm stumped on such an easy question.

I think I'm overworked.

Emotion: sleep

Thanks

The verb BE can function as a main/full/lexical verb and as an auxiliary verb, but not at the same time. In 'This is a really simple question', is is the only verb, so it cannot be an auxiliary. As a main verb, it is normally a copular/linking verb.

  • As an auxiliary verb, it is used to form progressive and passive constructions; it can be used for both: He is be ing i nterviewed now.
