simple past/past perfect

Hello,

1. Before the well rang, he had reached to school.

2. Before he had opened his wings, the third drop fell.

I have one doubt here. In case of two events that took place in past one after the another, we use past perfect for the event that happed first, and simple past for the event happened last.

We use the words such as before, after, when as conjuction in such cases.

I thought that the clause starting with Before should be in simple past and the next part in past perfect as given in example (1).

In the same way I thought that the clause starting with the word After should be in Past perfect such as

3. I slept after they had gone to school.

I am confused with the sentence (2). Is it correct?

What are the rules?

The above given thoughts are my own interpretation.

Please help me.
