Simple past v/s past perfect

I finished my studies before I moved to New york.

v/s

I had finished my studies before I moved to New york.

In my opinion, both the sentences are quite clear in terms of sequencing the events. Why should I use I had finished ?

Is it possibly because of time gap between the two events?

Had finished signifies more time gap ?

'Finished' suggests just before?
