Simple past vs. past perfect

Hello, Below are the two sentences: He worked in the same place before he left 3 months ago. He'd worked in the same place before he left 3 months ago. Which one is grammatically correct? Thank you

I find both acceptable as far as the tenses are concerned. However, you can't really "work in the same place" without specifying in what way it is "the same". If the prior context explains this then it's OK, but if not then the sentence structure seems iffy to me.
