Simple Past or Present Perfect?

What's correct: "Brian didn't eat anything yesterday, because he felt too sick." or "Brian hasn't eaten anything yesterday, because he felt too sick."?

Oh, and if you like, could you tell me what would happen if I took "today" instead of "yesterday"? Wouldn't that mean that it is still happening in the present, so I would have to use the present perfect?
