Simple Past and Present Continous from my test questions

I have two questions from my englisch test and I'm not convinced by my teacher.

1. Put the verbs in brackets into the simple present or the present continous tense.

Janet usually (start) work at 8 a.m., but this week she (start) at 7:15 a.m.

I wrote: Janet usually starts work at 8.a.m, but this week she is STARTING at 7:15
My teacher says it's: Janet usually starts work at 8.a.m, but this week she STARTS at 7:15

Is he right?

2. Simple Past: Put the correct form of the verbs into the gaps.
be,break,call,fall,find,hit,leave

Forty-five minutes later the plane BROKE up in a storm, and Juliana FELL 3000 metres, strapped in her seat.

I haven't heard that anything except relationships can BREAK UP. So I ask, can this be right too?

Hi,

I wrote: Janet usually starts work at 8.a.m, but this week she is STARTING at 7:15

Present Continuous seems fine to me here.

It can be used for a temporary course of action, recently begun, currenty engaged in, but not expected to be permanent.
