Simple past

Hello,

1. My aunt lived in Italy for four years.

2. My aunt had lived in Italy for four years.

What are the differences between (1) and (2)?

Past perfect tense in the second sentence is not required unless if it is in reference to another (past) action after it. My aunt had lived in Italy for four years when she married George.

My aunt had lived in Italy for four years when she married George.

At some time before now she lived there. Four years passed. She moved somewhere else. Or maybe she died.
hanuman_20002. My aunt had lived in Italy for four years.
At some time before a previously established time in the past she lived there.
