Simple or progressive aspect

Do we need the simple or the progressive aspect in the following sentence?

“The author draws attention to the problems African-Americans face/are facing.“

Top answer

Either aspect is fine. The progressive aspect alludes to on-going problems, perhaps problems recently in the news. The simple aspect might be more appropriate when writing about problems more generally — perennial problems.
