English in Russia

simple or continuous

Hello everyone !!!

An example from a book:
We had been watching the film for about half an hour when somebody hit me on the head.
A little boy who (WAS SITTING/SAT) two rows behind me said:
"I'm sorry, madam. I have done it by chance.
I have thrown the ice-cream to the boy who (IS SITTING/SITS) in front of you.
I thought he would catch it".

I'd rather use the continuous tense than simple tense. Is it correct to use simple in these cases ?

Thanks.

I would use continuous in both cases, because it is important that those two actions were in process when something else happened. Yes, simple is possible too. But if it is a test with only one correct choice use continuous
