Simple grammar question

I often fail to use prepositions correctly.

teachers, teach me how to use prepositions without any conventional errors

"Yesterday I went to school but the door to the hall was closed."

1) Can I omit 'to' in front of 'school' if 'school' can be treated the same as 'home'?

could you tell me why home is the kind of noun that does not need preposition?

2) is the usage of 'to the' correct?
