Simple Grammar

"He is the ambassador of 'Golmaal' after being involved with the 'Charity Edhi' which helps the poor people in Pakistan. "
Is the above sentence grammatical?
For me, it should be like this:
"He became the ambassador of 'Golmaal', after being involved with 'Charity Edhi' which helps the poor people in Pakistan."
What do you think teachers?
