Simple/ Compound Sentence

I still don't understand this.'John practises cricket and football regularly.'Isn't this a simple sentence as the sentence contains only one finite verb? But my grammar book says it's a compound one and it does not say why!If so what is the basic of a simple sentence? Only one subject, one verb and one object? Or can it have a compound subject and a compound object? Thanks in advance.
