Simple Apostrophe Question

I'm working on a children's school book and they are covering The Three R's. Now I want to know about using an apostrophe after the R. I know ordinarily, like CDs and DVDs we don't put the appostrophe, but on the other hand it might look a little odd leaving it out, considering we're only talking about one letter. So.
The Three Rs
or
The Three R's
Can it be a matter of style choice, or do I need to stick to hardcore rules and regulations?

If it is a book, check with your editor. I think it is a style choice, since the cases that are otherwise confusing are often allowed to use apostrophes where they are strictly uncalled for, as in "mind your p's and q's".
