In order for simile to work and make sense, one or two things should be considered. The subjects must fit the simile you try to make. Or, it must be idiomatic. None of your examples meets that criteria.

He is about as smart as a rock.

John's sense of humor is as dry as a cardboard.

She is as blind as a bat.

His apartment is as cold as an ic
