Are they both correct?
A. Similarly, with rocket, I am creating an plane that would take us to Mars.
B. Similar to rocket, I am creating an plane that would take us to Mars

Perhaps this will help. Similar is an adjective, and similarly is its adverbial counterpart. I am building a rocket similar to those made by NASA.
