Per British punctuation ...

The sign said 'Keep off the grass'.
Full stop OUTSIDE because not a direct quote?

The email read 'Please respond to this ASAP'.
Full stop OUTSIDE because not a direct quote?

The message said 'Bring the loot my noon'.
Full stop OUTSIDE because not a direct quote?

I don't like the sentence 'I ain't got none'.
Full stop OUTSIDE because not a direct quote?

Her comment was 'Keep it brief.'
Full stop INSIDE because a direct quote?

To me, they are all direct quotes.
