Signal and Speed

Are these sentences correct?

1. The signal and speed are excellent. (Is this correct? Am I using the verb 'are' to refer the the subjects separately?)
2. The signal and speed is excellent. (Is this correct? Am I using the verb 'is' to refer to the subject collectively as one item?)

Thanks
