Signage Grammar

I have a psychotic friend.

We have a sign hanging in our home stating, "the Smith's - home is where our story began"

Now this friend is telling us the sign is grammatically incorrect because the family name should not have an apostrophe in this case. Is she correct or as I suspect psychotic. She won't let it drop so now neither will I.

It is wrong. It should read either The Smit hs (which is plural and refers to the family members as a group) or The Smith s' (which is plural possessive and refers to the family home).

the Smith's - home is where our story began
Why the dash? It makes it unclear which of two things you're trying to say -- The Smiths as a title, or The Smiths' home as the subject of a complete sentence?

----- The Smiths -----
Home is where our story began.
