Sight of the wedding dress ruled out...

Hi

Could you please explain this sentence to me? (There's no additional context.)

In any case, the sight of the wedding dress ruled out any possibility of catharsis.

My attempt:

The speaker saw a wedding dress, which didn't let him release his feelings of sadness, anger, etc.

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, except that with no more context we don't know for sure that the speaker is talking about himself.
