Sides vs Advantages

Why we pronounce the es in advantages as /iz/ and sides as /s/?

Top answer

We don't. Well I don't anyway. I pronounce the second "s" in "sides" as /z/.

  • We don't.
  • Well I don't anyway.
  • I pronounce the second "s" in "sides" as /z/.
  • The reason for the extra vowel sound before the /z/ in "advantages" is simply because the "g" is soft, and the combination of soft "g" followed immediately by /z/ (or /s/) is almost impossible to say.
