Vocabulary

sideline

i get confused completely.

Since last december, however, few,if any,new messages from Zarqavi have appeared, leading to speculation that he has been sidelined.

Can you explain me the meaning of sideline in context and the effect and meaning of adverbs that come subsequently?

Regards.

In sports, if a player is "sidelined," he is taken out of the action. So that means that Zarqavi (if he has been sidelined) is no longer a "player" (a decision maker, whatever) in what's going on. The construction is awkward, with all those commas.

  • There haven't been many messages - in fact, there may not have been any.
  • ("few, if any, new messages")

thnks geek. i got the meaning of sideline.

by the way, the sentence was from the newsweek the last issue. So i thought it may have been a common usage that i hadnt known( the commas and adverbs) but it seems redundant.
