Side business

It might be good for you to have a side business unless you abuse the rules of the company you are employed by.

Is this good?
Can it be shortened?
Thanks.

Try: Provided the applicable rules of the employing company are followed, side businesses can be beneficial for employees. I would use this construction if the sentence were to be included in an employee handbook or something like that. If the handbook were produced by a specific company, you could eliminate the word employing, because it would be obvious what company you meant.

  • If it were to go in a textbook about business, or something that could relate to more than one company, it would need to be left in.
  • Your sentence is fine if you are just writing it to a friend, or using it in conversation, or presenting in an informal context to students or at a conference that has a more informal style.
