Sick beats?

What are sick beats?
I just saw pitch perfect, and there was a line 'It was a sick beat', which was translated as 'It's really good'. Then, the next line was 'Yeah, I've always thought her beats are pretty sick', which was translated as 'Yeah, I've always thought her music is really good'.
I don't understand why sick beats are good music?

I don't think the term is used to describe people.

I think it is, but it's definitely not an appropriate response to "How are you?" Well, unless the person being asked is literally sick -- then maybe.

In informal language, "That dude is sick" could mean either "That guy is amazing/awesome" or "That guy is seriously messed up"
