Shut down/close up

Are both these sentences correct (and do they mean the same):


a) "If it weren't for the government's subsidies, many bookstores would shut down."


b) "If it weren't for the government's subsidies, many bookstores would close up."

Christine Christie Are both these sentences correct Yes, but in my opinion the first is better. shut down and close down are both better than close up . shut up doesn't work at all.

Yes, but in my opinion the first is better.

shut down and close down are both better than close up. shut up doesn't work at all.
