shrink at opportunity

A commentator said this, is in natural? Does it mean anything?
He didn't shrink at the opportunity and showed the coach he could play under pressure.

Thanks

It seems natural enough. Think about how you would respond to rocks falling on your head by crouching to the ground (ie 'shrinking') and covering yourself with your hands to protect yourself. Shrinking in general is to respond to something challenging with caution, fear, avoidance.
