What's the difference between TV serial and TV series?

A serial is one long story that is split into several episodes. It won't really make sense if you just watch one programme. For example, major works of literature are often turned into TV series as there is too much 'plot' to fit into one programme - for example, "Pride and Prejudice".

In the US, what Nona describes as a serial we refer to as a "mini-series." (And the Pride and Prejudice one was fabulous!)
