shower

Which sentence would you use?
"They take a shower" or "They take showers"

My textbook says "To talk about several people each doing the same thing, English usually prefers a plural noun for the repeated ideas", but I think that "They take a shower" is more common than the other sentence.

Could you explain it?

Anonymous Could you explain it? I think it depends on the context, though either is possible.
