Both of these sentences are fine, except the "had" is unnecessary. In this context it adds nothing to the meaning. Simple past does the job. Actually, I think the "had" is wrong, because "when" is a specific time.

Sorry, Vincent, if I'm not careful here I'm gonna lose my angel.

You could say, "After Mei Ling and her mother had completed their credit applications, the salesgirl showed them some jewellery."

But I suppose you could use simple past there also. Probably your original tense is legal, else Clive would have spotted it. I'll have to go back to the drawing board.
