Show them respect//respect them

Mexicans believe the spirits of the dead come back on Halloween and stay for two days. While the spirits are around, people show them respect by leaving food and drinks for them.

Hi,
Is it the same to say "show respect for them" and "respect them" instead of "show them respect" in the above? Thanks.

Hi, 'To show respect' suggests an action of some kind. 'Show' here is like 'demonstrate'. eg I respect my friend.
