Shouldn't the comma be after "summer" instead?

Van Gaal spent over £150 million on six new signings in the summer but, after 17 games, United are third and trail English Premier League leaders Chelsea by 10 points.

The above is from a local newspaper report.

Shouldn't the comma be after "summer" instead?

Thanks.

If it were not for the parenthetical after 17 games , we would expect a comma after summer . However, with the comma after but , some of us do not use the first comma.

And I would place a comma after 'summer' while retaining the one after 'games'.
