Private tutoring means "one on one" teaching.
I don't remember ever come across the term " private tuition". Tutition is the amount of money a school or learning institution charges the students. e.g. College tuition is going up every year.

AlpheccaStarsAs an American, I use tuition exclusively in the context of money paid for instruction.
I have never heard it used in the US as meaning "education," "instruction" or classes.

I've never heard the word used to mean fees. We would say 'tuition fees' when referring to the money paid for tuition. I know this is an old thread, but I came here wondering why a proof reader had crossed out tuition and replaced it with tutoring when they mean essentially the same thing.
Now I know: She's American and I'm English.

Here in N.America, tutoring is much more commonly used. My inlaws from Singapore use the word tuition for what we would use as tutoring.
