Should we put a comma before the conjunction 'and'?

I think normally we do not put a comma before the conjunction "and". An English teacher here change someone's sentence into

I studied in Britain for five years, and obtained my Bachelor Degree (International Journalism) in 2008.

Should we remove the comma?

He's using Bachelor Degree as a noun, so that would be an uneccessary adjustment. A comma before the and is acceptable, if the sentence benefits from a pause.
