should vs would

HI , please read the following paragraph.

If she had been pretending, she would have hidden for a reasonable time before coming out and telling her story.
(C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, 1950)

i think i can replace "would" with "should"  without causing any change in meaning.am i right?
if yes so why he used "would" instead of "should"?

I have changed the sentence to present tense form, Do you think 'should' should be used instead of
