“Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.”
The prosperity of a country nowadays can be partly measured by economic growth, which is a certain result of science and technology delvelopment. Some people hold the view that university students should pursue those related subjects at schools while the others believe that they should go for what suits them best. This essay will discuss both views and conclude with an opinion.
To start with, the first view is completely justified. The fact remains that universities and colleges are the two main sources providing well-qualified workers for a country’s labor market. By implementing policies that make science and technology related subjects to be compulsory at schools, the government can ensure that knowledge and skill gaps would be covered as well as the economy can develop sustainably.
As regards the second view, which appears to be even more convincing. There is solid evidence that a society needs as many artists as scientists. Despite the fact that science and technology knowledge can provide university students better job opportunities, higher salaries to improve their living conditions, it is generally believed that is an extreme waste of talents for those art students to give up their own dreams to pursue career opportunities. As a consequence, this may lead to an imbalance in workforce in fututre.
On the whole, the government should consider thoughfully whether to give the students freedom to choose subjects or to force them to learn some particular selected ones. To my opinion, students will prosper best through a curriculum that celebrates their various talents.
