Should there be an article?

Hi,

I find there are many times I was told some articles are optional or redundant but i still don't know why. I was told there is always an article unless they are not countable. Here is a case I heard from a TV drama that has no article. I am not sure if it is because they are used in conversation or just being informal. Here is the sentence I heard," I will come by the house after shift." Shouldn't there be an article before shift so it becomes "I will come by the house after the shift?"

Thanks,

The article is required. "The shift."

There are many cases where an article is omitted:

I study mathematics. (not "the mathematics")
My son likes to play baseball

My shift may be better if the speaker is talking about his own work schedule.

There might be a dialect that permits "after shift" in the same way as "after work" and "after school", but that dialect is not mine.

Thank you for all your inputs. big thanks!

I also came across this sentence on some university pages. I wonder why there is no "the" before campus?
Here it is:"Students entering University directly from high school are assigned to Traditional Style Residence in University Hall. U-Hall is located in the lower floors of the main building of campus."

I guess that is the thing I

The most common phrase is "on campus." "Of campus" sounds a bit odd.

There are many places on campus for quiet studying.
She lives off campus in an apartment.
