Should there be a comma after expert?

Anyone call him or herself as an "expert" but there is no ................

If the part of the sentence after "but" can be considered as a separate sentence, then usually there is a comma, but if it is just a phrase - then no comma. I like coffee, but I try to drink it not very often. He is but a child.
